Why should people go to AI, instead of bringing AI to people?

Don't make people enter the world of AI.
Bring AI into their world.
Why should people go to AI, instead of bringing AI to people?
Isn't AI supposed to be conversational?
Then why do users have to open a dedicated AI app, start a new conversation, and search through past chats to find what they need?
People already use messaging apps every day.
They find their friends, open conversations, and pick up where they left off.
They don't need to learn a new way to communicate.
So, what if AI adopted the conversational experience people are already familiar with?
This proposal explores two approaches.
The first is to redesign the existing ChatGPT interface to feel more like a messaging app.
The second is to give users the option of talking to AI through the messaging apps they already use.
These approaches are connected, but they don't have to be implemented together.
Today's AI chat interfaces are organized around conversation histories and text-based titles.
Users have to move between conversations and search for the information they need. Sometimes, they even have to copy and paste information from one conversation into another.
What if we redesigned the interface?
Instead of a list of text-based conversation titles, let users identify their conversation partners through profile images.
An AI that helps with photography. An AI that discusses product design. An AI that assists with software development.
Each conversation partner has a distinctive image. Users simply select the image to open the corresponding conversation.
They can navigate between conversations and resume previous discussions just as they would in a familiar messaging app.
Frequently used AI companions can also be added to Favorites.
Instead of reading every name, users can recognize the right conversation partner at a glance.
We can take this idea one step further.
Rather than treating AI conversations as separate chat rooms, we can give each AI a distinct identity as an independent conversation partner.
Users can create as many AI companions as they want, each with its own name and profile image.
For example:
An AI companion for photography
An AI companion for product design
An AI companion for software development
An AI companion for exploring new ideas
Each AI maintains its own conversation history and context.
Users no longer have to put every topic into a single conversation.
People working on multiple projects simultaneously can develop each project with a different AI companion.
When necessary, users can also choose to share selected information between AI companions.
Instead of forcing every conversation into one place, let users organize their relationships with AI in the way that works best for them.
AI companions can have profile images that distinguish them from human friends.
People can use photographs of themselves, while AI companions can have their own distinctive characters or visual identities.
For example, a translucent burgundy character could serve as the profile image of an AI companion.
A small AI label beside the profile would make its identity immediately recognizable.
AI doesn't need to pretend to be human.
The goal isn't to make AI look exactly like a person. It's to make AI communication feel natural within an environment people already understand.
There is one important principle to preserve.
Making the interface feel like a messaging app does not mean limiting ChatGPT to the capabilities of a messaging app.
Existing capabilities—including long-form writing, image generation and uploads, and file handling—should remain available.
The goal is to change how people interact with AI, not to reduce what AI can do.
Users should be able to navigate between conversations as naturally as they do in a messaging app while retaining the full capabilities and workspace of ChatGPT for more complex tasks.
The idea is to combine the familiarity of messaging with the power of ChatGPT.
If Stage 1 improves the experience within ChatGPT itself, Stage 2 expands the ways people can access AI.
Give each AI a unique ID.
Users can search for an AI by its ID and add it as a friend in any supported messaging service.
Whether they use KakaoTalk or another messaging platform, they can talk to AI just as they would message an existing contact, provided the necessary integration is available.
Instead of opening a separate AI app, they can interact with AI in the messaging environment they already use every day.
Why should users have only one AI companion?
People often work on several things at once.
They might be working on photography while developing a product design concept, or writing software while exploring a new business idea.
There is no reason they must discuss everything in a single conversation.
Having separate conversation partners can make it easier to work on different projects simultaneously.
Users can add as many AI companions as they want and maintain independent conversations with each of them.
Each companion has its own ID, profile image, and conversation history.
Their identities remain distinct, while the way users interact with them follows the familiar conventions of messaging.
Instead of consolidating every AI into one, let users have as many AI companions as they want.
Stage 2 is not necessary for every user.
People who need long-form writing, image work, or file processing can continue using the ChatGPT app.
Those who primarily want casual conversations or quick answers can interact with AI through the messaging apps they already use.
Potential use cases include:
Everyday conversations and simple questions
Quick information searches and checks
Reminders and useful notifications
Voice conversations, where supported
The features available through external messaging platforms may vary depending on their technical limitations and integration capabilities.
There is no need to reproduce every ChatGPT feature in every messaging app.
Users simply need the freedom to choose the conversational environment that best suits their needs.
Stage 1 should deliver value on its own. Stage 2 should remain an additional convenience for those who want it.
Once AI becomes part of a messaging environment, does it always have to wait for the user to initiate a conversation?
With the user's permission, AI could reach out first.
It could send reminders at scheduled times, provide useful information, or remind users of upcoming appointments.
This approach could be particularly valuable in services designed for older adults.
Imagine an AI that contacts an older person living alone at a scheduled time every day to check on their well-being.
"Good morning! Did you sleep well last night?"
The AI could engage in a natural conversation and try again if there is no response.
If repeated attempts fail, it could notify a designated family member or care provider according to a predefined protocol.
Appropriate safeguards and human involvement would be necessary to assess potential emergencies and coordinate an actual emergency response.
The goal is not to replace people entirely, but to help maintain regular contact and support basic safety checks.
The same approach could benefit anyone who needs regular check-ins or reminders.
This is one potential application of the messaging integration proposed in Stage 2.
Instead of always waiting for users to reach out, AI could proactively connect with them when they need it.
STAGE 1
STAGE 2
Primary goal
Improve the ChatGPT experience
Expand access to AI
Environment
Existing ChatGPT app
External messaging apps
Interface
A familiar, messenger-like experience
Existing messaging interfaces
AI companions
Identified through profile images
Added through unique IDs
Core capabilities
Preserve existing features, including writing, images, and files
Focus on everyday conversations and simple requests
Requirement
Core improvement
Optional additional access
Independent value
Valuable on its own
Provides additional convenience
Both stages support the same vision, but they do not have to be implemented sequentially.
Stage 1 improves the experience within ChatGPT itself.
Stage 2 expands access by allowing AI to meet users in the messaging environments they already use.
Each can be pursued independently, and users can choose the environment that best suits their needs.
Both environments could also support proactive AI features, allowing AI to reach out first and provide assistance when needed.
People already know how to have conversations.
They already know how to use messaging apps.
So instead of teaching people an entirely new way to communicate, what if AI adapted to the way people already communicate?
The first step is to redesign the existing ChatGPT interface to feel more like a messaging app.
Users identify AI companions through profile images and select the conversation partner they want.
They can maintain multiple AI companions and work on different projects simultaneously.
All the while, they retain access to ChatGPT's existing capabilities, including long-form writing, image generation, and file handling.
The second step is to let users who want it add AI as a friend in their existing messaging apps.
Casual conversations can happen in a familiar messaging environment, while more complex tasks can remain in the ChatGPT app.
There is no reason every user must adopt the same environment.
Users should be free to choose how they interact with AI.
Over time, these environments could also support more proactive services, such as appointment reminders and well-being check-ins, allowing AI to reach out when users need assistance.
This is not simply a proposal to redesign an AI chat interface.
It is a proposal to change how AI connects with people.
Improving AI intelligence is important. But so is making that intelligence easy and natural for people to access.
Don't make people enter the world of AI.
Bring AI into their world.
