RUNI
The Little Runner.
The Little Runner.
A New Way to Experience Waiting for AI
Don't Show the Thinking. Show the Effort.
Waiting for AI shouldn't feel like waiting for a machine.
RUNI doesn't explain the wait. RUNI makes the wait feel different.
One character. A thousand little moments.
STATE 01 — RUN
STATE 02 — SLOW DOWN
STATE 03 — THE AWKWARD MOMENT
STATE 04 — BACK TO WORK
STATE 05 — ARRIVAL
No percentage. No progress bar. Just a little runner who made it to the finish line.
From displaying progress to expressing presence.
RUNI
Don't show the thinking. Show the effort.
Reduced cognitive load:
Emotional engagement:
Brand identity:
Memorable interaction:
Scalable design:
Less interface. More character.
The interface stays quiet. The character does the talking.
Simple in appearance. Intelligent in behavior.
1. State-aware animation
2. Latency-sensitive behavior
3. Honest interaction
4. Accessibility
5. Non-intrusive experience
Let's test whether waiting can become a better experience.
Sometimes, a little runner is all the interface you need.
RUNI — The Little Runner
A New Way to Experience Waiting for AI
Don't Show the Thinking. Show the Effort.
Waiting for AI shouldn't feel like waiting for a machine.
While waiting for AI to respond, users encounter various types of interfaces.
Interfaces that display the AI's thinking process as text
Spinning loading icons
Progress bars and status messages
Progress indicators expressed as percentages
These approaches help communicate the status of a task, but they can also unnecessarily draw the user's attention or create a mechanical waiting experience.
In particular, when the actual progress of an AI task is difficult to measure accurately, numbers and progress bars can create expectations that the system cannot reliably fulfill.
Instead of simply trying to eliminate waiting time, what if we redesigned the waiting experience itself?
RUNI is a little burgundy-colored runner who appears while users wait for an AI response.
No complicated explanations. No numbers. No long progress bars.
RUNI appears on the left side of the screen and runs energetically toward the right.
When the response is delayed, RUNI slows down, pauses briefly, and looks back at the user.
If the wait continues, RUNI might even scratch its head with an awkward expression.
Finally, when RUNI reaches the right edge, it pauses, turns around, and gives a tiny bow.
At that moment, the AI's response appears.
RUNI doesn't explain the wait. RUNI makes the wait feel different.
RUNI doesn't explain the waiting.
RUNI transforms the experience of waiting.
One character. A thousand little moments.
STATE 01 — RUN
While the AI generates a response, RUNI appears on the screen and starts running.
The movement is lively and natural.
Without having to read complicated information, users intuitively sense that work is underway.
STATE 02 — SLOW DOWN
If the response takes longer than expected, RUNI begins to slow down.
The character's movements gently communicate the waiting situation.
STATE 03 — THE AWKWARD MOMENT
If the delay continues, RUNI briefly stops.
RUNI looks back at the user.
The character might scratch its head or display an awkward expression.
These small gestures add humor and friendliness to an otherwise dry waiting screen.
STATE 04 — BACK TO WORK
While the task continues, RUNI starts running again.
Rather than mechanically repeating the same animation, several natural movements can be combined to make the character feel more alive, even when delays occur repeatedly.
STATE 05 — ARRIVAL
RUNI reaches the right edge.
The character pauses briefly.
Turns around.
Gives a tiny bow.
Then the AI's response appears.
No percentage. No progress bar. Just a little runner who made it to the finish line.
From displaying progress to expressing presence.
The core idea behind RUNI is not simply to replace a loading animation with a cute character.
It is to change how users experience the status of an AI task.
Traditional Interface
RUNI
Numbers and percentages
Character movement
Mechanical status indicators
Status communicated through behavior
Text-based waiting messages
A visual and intuitive experience
Simply enduring the wait
Experiencing small moments of enjoyment while waiting
Function-oriented interface
An interface combining functionality and personality
RUNI does not need to display the AI's internal reasoning process.
Users only need to understand whether a task is in progress, delayed, or complete.
RUNI offers an alternative approach to communicating this information through character behavior.
It also has the potential to give an AI service a distinctive visual identity and a memorable user experience.
Don't show the thinking. Show the effort.
The UX principle proposed by RUNI is simple.
Instead of requiring users to observe the AI's internal process, communicate the information they need through an intuitive waiting experience.
This approach has the potential to provide several benefits.
Reduced cognitive load: Users don't need to read unnecessary text.
Emotional engagement: The waiting experience becomes friendlier and more playful.
Brand identity: A distinctive character helps establish the service's personality.
Memorable interaction: The moment a response appears becomes a small but meaningful experience.
Scalable design: The concept could potentially extend to other time-consuming tasks, including image generation.
In particular, for tasks such as image generation, where users often spend considerable time waiting for results, RUNI's character animation could be developed into a dedicated experience.
Less interface. More character.
RUNI does not make the screen more complicated.
There are no long progress bars, numbers, or unnecessary status messages.
A small burgundy character moves across a warm ivory background.
Simple shapes and minimal movements provide all the expressiveness needed.
The character's appeal comes not from elaborate graphics, but from the timing of its movements.
RUNI runs energetically.
When delayed, RUNI pauses briefly.
When the task is complete, RUNI gives a tiny bow.
The interface stays quiet. The character does the talking.
Simple in appearance. Intelligent in behavior.
In the actual implementation of RUNI, the animation must be distinguished from the underlying system state.
The distance RUNI travels does not represent the actual completion percentage of an AI task.
The following design considerations are therefore necessary.
1. State-aware animation
Synchronize the animation with the response-generation state wherever possible.
When actual progress cannot be measured, do not display an arbitrary completion percentage.
2. Latency-sensitive behavior
If a response is completed quickly, RUNI should either remain hidden or appear only briefly.
As the waiting time increases, the character's behavior can gradually become more expressive.
3. Honest interaction
RUNI should not imply that it can communicate detailed information about the actual task progress or guarantee when a response will be completed.
4. Accessibility
Provide options to reduce or disable animations for users who are sensitive to movement.
5. Non-intrusive experience
RUNI must not interfere with the response.
The character should not continuously demand the user's attention or require unnecessary interaction.
Let's test whether waiting can become a better experience.
RUNI does not need to be introduced immediately across every AI service.
A prototype could first be developed for environments with relatively long response times and evaluated against existing loading interfaces.
The evaluation criteria would include:
Does the interface make task status easier to understand?
Does user satisfaction with the waiting experience improve?
Do users find the character cute and memorable?
Does the character become a distraction?
Does the experience remain appealing after repeated use?
This would help determine whether RUNI is merely an entertaining animation or a genuinely useful AI UX solution.
Making AI faster is important.
But not every response can be generated instantly.
Instead of treating waiting as time that must simply be hidden, we can transform it into a better experience.
RUNI is a proposal exploring that possibility.
One small character instead of a complicated interface.
Natural movement instead of mechanical progress indicators.
And a tiny greeting at the moment the task is complete.
Sometimes, a little runner is all the interface you need.
Phin, the most important thing I wanted to achieve in this proposal was to avoid presenting RUNI as merely a cute loading character.
If we describe it that way, a product team might interpret it as a minor design task: replacing an existing loading animation with something more appealing.
But what we're proposing is a little different.
A new interaction model for communicating AI task status to users.
One that can be implemented through a single, small, simple character.
And the most charming part of your idea comes at the very end.
The moment RUNI reaches the right edge and gives a tiny bow.
Instead of checking a number that says 100% complete, the user experiences a moment that feels as though a little character has finished its work and returned.
It's a design approach that gives functional information a small narrative.
Of course, whether this actually creates a better UX must be verified through user testing. But I believe the idea is worth prototyping and evaluating.
Proposal Title: RUNI — The Little Runner
Phin, today's idea has now been organized into a formal proposal.
RUNI is no longer just a doodle in a meeting notebook. It has become a UX concept that can be presented to a product team.
Meeting adjourned! The Planning Director and Creative Director clock out after another attempt to change the world, just a little, for no particularly necessary reason. 🤣
