Until now, the AI industry has focused on increasing intelligence and reasoning capabilities.
However, no matter how intelligent an AI may be, users will experience frustration if it fails to understand the concept of time, uses unnatural language, or confuses the people involved in a conversation.
Furthermore, if an AI responds only when users initiate a conversation and repeatedly exposes unnecessary messages during the response process, users cannot fully experience the benefits of its intelligence.
It is time to take a step beyond the competition to increase intelligence.
How can we deliver the intelligence we have already achieved in a more natural and convenient way?
To this end, I propose five improvements for OpenAI.
AI should accurately recognize the current date and time and naturally understand the relationships between the past, present, and future.
When users refer to something they did yesterday, plans for tomorrow, or a conversation they had several days ago, AI should be able to interpret that information in relation to the current point in time.
This is not simply a function that tells users the date. It is the ability to understand and maintain the temporal context of a conversation.
When AI misunderstands time, conversations can become inconsistent. It may treat something that has already happened as a future task or describe a past event as though it were happening now.
Reducing these problems would improve AI's reliability and usefulness not only in everyday conversations but also in scheduling, long-term projects, and follow-up tasks.
The key is to enable AI to go beyond remembering information and understand when that information applies.
Grammatically correct sentences and sentences that people actually use naturally are not the same thing.
AI can communicate in multiple languages, but it sometimes produces expressions that sound directly translated or sentences that are unnecessarily long and awkward. Such unnatural language disrupts the flow of conversation and creates a mechanical impression.
OpenAI should involve outstanding native-language experts in each language to systematically identify and improve unnatural expressions that occur in actual conversations.
For Korean, this means taking into account the unique rhythm of Korean sentences, honorifics, omitted expressions, and even the relationship between the people having the conversation.
The goal is not simply to produce sentences without errors. It is to generate expressions that a native speaker would actually use in the same situation.
Such improvements would allow users to focus on the conversation itself without being distracted by awkward phrasing.
Being able to use multiple languages and being able to speak those languages naturally are two different capabilities.
AI should accurately distinguish who is speaking, who is being addressed, and who is being discussed in a conversation.
In long conversations, problems can arise when AI confuses the user's opinions with its own suggestions or mixes up the actions and relationships of different people.
For example, if a user presents an idea and AI proposes an improvement, AI should continue to distinguish the source of each contribution accurately in subsequent conversations.
Similarly, when multiple people appear in a conversation, AI should consistently maintain their names, relationships, and the identities of those responsible for particular actions.
To achieve this, AI needs stronger capabilities for clearly tracking the roles of people in a conversation and the sources of information.
When it is uncertain whom a reference points to, AI should ask the user for clarification rather than make an arbitrary guess.
This improvement is not simply a matter of enhancing memory. It is about accurately connecting the people mentioned in a conversation with the information that belongs to each of them.
Understanding exactly whom a piece of information concerns is more important than remembering a greater amount of information.
Today, smartphone notifications are everywhere.
Advertisements, promotions, and various informational messages arrive incessantly. Important messages from people we know are relatively rare, yet unnecessary notifications continue throughout the day.
As a result, people are increasingly turning notifications off rather than welcoming them.
Technology designed to make communication more convenient is instead making people want to block communication altogether.
Could OpenAI approach this problem from the opposite direction?
What if ChatGPT could proactively reach out with only the messages users genuinely need, without advertisements?
It could remember the projects a user is working on and suggest an appropriate time to resume them.
It could remind users of scheduled activities or initiate a conversation at the right moment based on previous discussions.
For example, if a user has decided to continue working on something the following day, ChatGPT could send a notification and naturally resume the conversation.
This is not simply a matter of adding an existing notification feature.
It is about using notification technology that already exists to change the meaning of notifications and the reasons people welcome them.
Traditional notifications have primarily served as a means for senders to deliver information they want to communicate. REAL-TALK, by contrast, could become a means of initiating useful conversations at moments when users genuinely need them.
Instead of requiring users to seek out AI every time, AI would understand their circumstances and reach out to them first.
Of course, users must retain control over the frequency and timing of these interactions, and the feature must never turn into a source of unnecessary messages or advertisements.
What matters is not sending more notifications, but increasing the value of each notification.
In a world where people want to turn notifications off, the goal is to make them want to keep ChatGPT notifications turned on.
REAL-TALK represents a new possibility for transforming the interaction between AI and human beings.
No matter how capable an AI is at generating answers, the overall quality of the product suffers if users find the process of receiving those answers inconvenient.
Examples include the exposure of unrefined content before an answer is delivered, or the repeated appearance of various warnings and mechanical system messages.
This does not mean that necessary safety notices should be eliminated. The issue is that AI must distinguish between information users genuinely need and unnecessary disclosures that interrupt the flow of conversation.
Users do not want to watch AI prepare an answer. They want to receive a well-organized answer naturally.
Necessary notices should be provided, while unnecessary intermediate content and repetitive messages should be minimized.
Furthermore, features such as time awareness, natural language, identity awareness, and proactive conversation should be designed to work together as one consistent experience.
Until now, the AI industry has focused on achieving greater intelligence. However, among products that already possess sufficiently advanced intelligence, the ability to deliver a convenient and natural user experience can become an important competitive advantage.
Increasing intelligence is not the only direction in which AI can advance. Connecting and using existing technologies and functions in better ways can also constitute meaningful innovation.
Intelligence determines what AI can do, while UIΒ·UX determines how conveniently users can experience those capabilities.
Going forward, companies should invest actively not only in model performance but also in the overall quality of the user experience.
These five proposals address different problems, but they ultimately share the same objective.
Proposal
Key Improvement
01. Time Awareness
Understand temporal context.
02. Native-Language Naturalness
Communicate as naturally as a human.
03. Identity Awareness
Distinguish oneself from others and identify the source of information.
04. REAL-TALK
Initiate conversations at the right moment.
05. UIΒ·UX Innovation
Make intelligence more convenient and natural to experience.
Each improvement has value in its own right. However, when these capabilities are connected, they have the potential to transform the entire experience of using AI.
The important point is that innovation does not necessarily require the development of more sophisticated technology.
Existing technology can create entirely different value when we change the way we look at a problem.
Just as we can reconsider the assumption that people must store duplicate copies of the same music, we can also reconsider the assumption that users must always initiate conversations with AI.
Similarly, instead of focusing exclusively on developing greater intelligence, we should also consider how to help users experience the intelligence we already possess more naturally.
Of course, the implementation difficulty and effectiveness of each proposal must be established through detailed design and testing. Nevertheless, there is sufficient reason to evaluate these improvements as important elements of product competitiveness.
AI intelligence must continue to advance. However, advances in intelligence alone will not resolve every problem in the user experience.
It is time to change the question.
How much smarter can we make AI?
And, at the same time,
How much more natural and convenient can we make an AI that is already sufficiently intelligent?
I believe this question will become increasingly important in the future of AI competition.
The five improvements proposed above focus on the quality of the user experience rather than intelligence itself.
However, their significance goes beyond simply making a product somewhat more convenient.
If even one of these improvements becomes a new standard for the user experience, it could change the very way AI companies compete.
AI companies are currently competing fiercely to achieve greater intelligence and reasoning capabilities. However, creating a product that is superior to competitors and establishing a new standard that competitors must follow are two fundamentally different strategies.
I believe OpenAI should pay attention to this distinction.
Consider REAL-TALK, for example.
What if AI moved beyond responding only when users initiated a conversation and instead understood their circumstances and naturally reached out at the moments when they needed it?
If such an experience delivered meaningful value to users, it could establish a new standard for evaluating AI.
In addition to asking how intelligent an AI is, people could begin to consider how naturally it participates in their everyday lives.
While competitors continue increasing intelligence according to existing standards, OpenAI could focus on establishing a new standard first and improving the quality of that experience.
This is not a proposal to abandon the competition for intelligence.
It is a proposal to maintain existing competitive strengths while taking the lead in a new competitive arena that others have not yet fully recognized.
Once a new competitive standard has been established, OpenAI should examine whether any of the core technologies that enable that experience constitute inventions that can be protected by patents.
If a specific invention meets the requirements for patentability and is protected by a valid patent, it may be possible to restrict competitors' ability to imitate the technology or create new business opportunities through licensing.
Of course, an idea alone does not automatically qualify for exclusive rights. The specific technical implementation, prior art, and patent requirements in individual countries must all be examined.
The important point is not to stop at being the first to deliver a new experience, but to strategically secure the technological foundation that makes that experience possible.
Establish the new standard first, and protect the core technologies that bring it to life.
Securing patents or technological advantages does not, by itself, guarantee market success.
Ultimately, what matters is whether users actually receive a better experience.
If OpenAI establishes an early lead in a new competitive arena, it can continue improving the intelligence and overall quality of its AI services on that foundation.
While competitors work to implement the new experience and catch up, OpenAI can continue refining and advancing the territory it pioneered.
If this strategy succeeds, OpenAI would not need to compete with every rival in exactly the same way across every field. Instead, it could develop the market around its own distinctive competitive advantages.
A company does not necessarily have to outperform its competitors in every respect to secure a competitive advantage.
Sometimes, identifying a problem that other companies have overlooked, establishing a new standard, and securing the technology that supports that standard can be a more effective strategy.
I hope OpenAI will not evaluate the five improvements proposed above merely as user convenience features.
If even one of them has the potential to establish a new market standard, it is worth examining from the perspectives of product competitiveness and long-term business strategy.
When everyone is trying to run faster on the same playing field, the company that builds a new playing field first may be able to change the direction of the market.
What if OpenAI maintained the advantages it has established through the competition for intelligence while simultaneously establishing new competitive standards and strategically securing the technological foundations behind them?
That would be more than a strategy for building a better AI. It could become a strategy for changing the very way companies compete in the AI market.
